California's Proposition 65, officially the Safe Drinking Water and Toxic Enforcement Act of 1986, mandates that companies selling products in the state must provide warnings if those products contain chemicals identified by California as potentially causing cancer or reproductive harm. Rather than conducting extensive independent research, California typically adds chemicals to its list (now exceeding 900) based on findings from various reports or scientific bodies suggesting a possible link to these health issues. This has led to significant litigation for manufacturers. To mitigate this risk, the law offers a "safe harbor" provision, which many companies have utilized by including the state's recommended warning labels on their products.

This warning provided for this product does not mean it will necessarily cause cancer or other harm. Moreover, a Proposition 65 warning does not mean a product is in violation of any product-safety standards or requirements. In fact, the California government has clarified that “the fact that a product bears a Proposition 65 warning does not mean by itself that the product is unsafe.” The government has also explained, “You could think of Proposition 65 more as a ‘right to know’ law than a pure product safety law.”

While we believe our products are not harmful when used as designed, we choose to provide the warning as a result of this California law. To comply with California's Prop 65 regulations, International Engineering (Woody's) includes a warning on all of our items. This is because our products contain steel or stainless steel, both of which contain nickel. California has identified nickel as a potential carcinogen and is also evaluating its potential to cause reproductive harm. Woody's clarifies that nickel is a common element in all steel types, with stainless steel containing higher levels.  We would also like to reiterate that we are not aware of any health issues arising from the intended use of our steel-containing products. The Prop 65 warning is therefore provided to meet California's legal requirements for informing consumers about potential risks associated with nickel.
